What is oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress is a metabolic state in which free radicals and radical scavengers are out of balance. Free radicals are oxygen compounds that are missing an electron. They react very readily, because they seek to replace that missing electron. To do so they take electrons from other molecules, which in turn creates new free radicals.

How does oxidative stress arise?

Our body can usually cope with a certain amount of oxidative stress – but when it builds up, metabolic processes can be disturbed and cells can be damaged. There are various causes for this:

• Stress, lack of sleep
Smoking & alcohol
• a diet low in micronutrients, too much sugar
• infections, inflammation, allergies, chronic illness
• environmental toxins and airborne pollutants

An important marker of oxidative stress

8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine is an oxidised DNA building block used as a marker of oxidative stress. As one of the most common oxidative breakdown products of nucleic acid bases, it can be raised in humans by various environmental factors such as UV radiation. It is therefore directly involved in the damage caused by oxidative changes to the DNA.
