hello

The cause of an increased histamine concentration in the stool can be due to the consumption of histamine-rich foods, but also to a food allergy, high stress levels, or impaired breakdown. The term histaminosis describes the condition of having too much histamine in the body. In histamine intolerance, the cause lies in a disorder of histamine breakdown.

.What exactly happens in histamine intolerance?

Histamine plays important roles in the body, but excessive histamine can lead to pseudoallergic intolerance reactions in the nervous system, as well as the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. It acts as an inflammatory mediator against harmful substances. Anyone who has come into contact with a stinging nettle knows the feeling – redness, itching, pain, and swelling.

What should be avoided?

Histamine is naturally present in some plant-based foods. However, there are also products that become rich in histamine only through processing, preservation, or ripening processes (such as lactic acid–fermented products). This is due to microorganisms capable of converting the amino acid histidine into histamine.

What does the histamine level in stool indicate?

Regular measurement of histamine in stool also allows for reliable assessment of the success of an elimination diet. Simultaneous testing of DAO activity and histamine in stool provides important differential diagnostic insights for distinguishing between histamine intolerance and food allergy.

How can histamine intolerance be detected?

The most common symptoms of histamine intolerance are:
Skin: sudden flushing, rash, hives, itching
Gastrointestinal tract: bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
Respiratory tract: blocked or runny nose, asthma

What causes histamine in the gut?

Histamine can cause various reactions in the gut, especially in cases of histamine intolerance. Histamine is a chemical compound that occurs naturally in the body and plays an important role in the immune system and in allergic reactions. In the digestive system, histamine can increase stomach acid production and stimulate the activity of muscle cells in the walls of the gastrointestinal tract. This can lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain or cramps, diarrhea, and bloating. These symptoms are typical of histamine intolerance, in which the body has difficulty breaking down histamine effectively, resulting in a buildup and the unpleasant reactions described.

How can you tell if your gut microbiome is damaged?

A disrupted or “damaged” gut microbiome can indeed manifest through a variety of symptoms, most of which affect the digestive tract. Some of the most common signs of an imbalanced gut flora include:
Digestive problems: symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain. These issues can result from an imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gut.

Nausea and cramps: impaired digestion caused by disrupted gut flora can lead to nausea or cramping.

Increased susceptibility to infections: a healthy gut microbiome supports the immune system. When it is compromised, the body may be more prone to infections.

Changes in mood and energy: studies show that gut health can influence mood and energy levels, as the gut plays an important role in producing certain neurotransmitters.

Allergies and intolerances: poor gut health may also increase sensitivity to allergens or food intolerances.

If symptoms like these occur – especially after antibiotic treatment, which can harm gut flora – it is advisable to consult a doctor. They may recommend tests to assess the extent of the imbalance and suggest ways to restore gut health, such as probiotics or dietary adjustments.

How is histamine broken down?

Diamine oxidase (DAO) breaks down histamine in the small intestine, preventing histamine from food from being absorbed into the body.
