What is oxidative stress?
Oxidative stress is a metabolic state in which free radicals and radical scavengers are out of balance. Free radicals are oxygen compounds that are missing an electron. They are highly reactive, because they seek to replace that missing electron. To do so they take electrons from other molecules, which in turn creates new free radicals.

An important marker of oxidative stress
8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine is an oxidised DNA building block used as a marker of oxidative stress. As one of the most common oxidative breakdown products of nucleic acid bases, it can be raised in humans through environmental factors such as UV radiation. It is therefore directly involved in the damage caused by oxidative modification of DNA.

How does oxidative stress arise?
The body can usually cope with a certain amount of oxidative stress – but when it builds up, metabolic processes can be disturbed and cells can be damaged. There are several causes:
• stress, lack of sleep
• smoking & alcohol
• a diet low in nutrients, too much sugar
• infections, inflammation, allergies, chronic illness
• environmental toxins and air pollutants
