The stone

.Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral but a rock: its deep blue comes from lazurite, joined by white streaks of calcite and golden specks of pyrite that look like stars. The most important deposits have lain for more than six thousand years in north-eastern Afghanistan, in the valley of Sar-e Sang.

Origin and tradition

Few stones have shaped art history so strongly. The Egyptians placed it in grave goods, and up to the Renaissance it was ground into ultramarine — the most expensive blue in painting, used for the Madonna’s robe. This descent from royal tombs and altarpieces gave lapis lazuli its reputation for the sublime, which it still carries.

What is attributed to it

With a hardness of 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, lapis lazuli is among the softer gemstones. It tolerates neither acids nor ultrasound, and strong sunlight can bleach the blue over the years. The white calcite veins and golden pyrite points are part of the rock — more or less pronounced depending on the source.

Material and care

Every bead is a natural product — depth of colour, calcite content and pyrite inclusions differ from piece to piece. Wipe only with a dry, soft cloth. Water, ultrasound and chemical cleaners are not suitable.
