The stone

.Aventurine is a quartz with fine embedded flakes of mica. When light falls on it, a soft sparkle comes back from within — an effect named after the stone in mineralogy: aventurescence. The green colouring from fuchsite is the best known, but it also occurs in red-brown, blue and grey. Important sources are India, Brazil and Russia.

Origin and tradition

The name goes back to an accident: in seventeenth-century Venice, copper filings fell into a glassmaker’s melt and produced a sparkling glass called a ventura — by chance. When a mineral with the same shimmer was later found, the name carried over. Since then aventurine has been linked in tradition with the fortunate coincidence.

What is attributed to it

Aventurine is a dense quartz with a hardness of about 7 on the Mohs scale — robust enough for everyday wear. The shimmering inclusions sit at different angles within the stone, so every bead sparkles differently and no two are alike. Strong heat and prolonged sunlight can gradually fade the colour.

Material and care

Every bead is a natural product — colour, mica content and grain differ from piece to piece. A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough for cleaning. Ultrasonic baths, steam and chemical cleaners are not suitable.
