The stone

.Rose quartz is a quartz whose delicate pink comes from the finest inclusions — microscopic fibres that scatter the light. That is why it rarely looks glass-clear but usually milky, as if lit from within. Large deposits lie in Brazil, Madagascar and Namibia.

Origin and tradition

Rose quartz is among the oldest gemstones of all; beads from Mesopotamia are more than four thousand years old. In tradition it was always associated with what turns towards others — friendship, affection, a conciliatory tone. It was traditionally given away rather than kept.

What is attributed to it

Rose quartz reaches a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and is therefore suited to everyday wear. Its colour, however, is light-sensitive: under continuous UV the pink fades. The milky cloudiness is not a defect but the hallmark of the stone — entirely clear pieces are rare.

Material and care

Every bead is a natural product — depth of colour and cloudiness differ from piece to piece. A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough for cleaning. Ultrasonic baths, steam and chemical cleaners are not suitable.
