The stone

.Lava stone forms when magma cools rapidly at the earth’s surface. The gas bubbles trapped in the process give it its open, porous surface and low weight. Its colour is a matt black to anthracite — no shine, no transparency, but a surface that absorbs light.

Origin and tradition

In volcanic regions from Iceland to Sicily, lava rock has always been built with and worked — as building material, millstone and jewellery. The idea of wearing a piece of cooled fire has accompanied lava stone through many cultures. Because of its pores, some people place a drop of essential oil on it, whose scent then fades over several hours.

What is attributed to it

Lava stone sits at about 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. It is lighter than most gemstones because gas inclusions run through it, and its open surface absorbs liquids — including perfume, soap and skin oils. That very property is what makes it popular as a carrier for essential oils.

Material and care

Every bead is a natural product — porosity and colour differ from piece to piece. Wipe with a dry cloth; because of the open pores, do not use water, soap or chemical cleaners.
