The stone

.Rock crystal is pure, colourless quartz. Where it could grow undisturbed it forms six-sided columns with a sharp point — a shape so regular that it was long thought to be frozen water. Hence the name: the Greek krýstallos means ice.

Origin and tradition

In the Alps, crystal hunters searched rock fissures for centuries; their finds went to princely courts and cabinets of curiosities. It was cut into drinking vessels, seals and lenses — the clearest material known before fine glass. In tradition it has stood ever since for what is undisguised.

What is attributed to it

Rock crystal has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and is therefore suited to everyday wear. Fine cracks and veil-like inclusions are normal in a natural stone; they catch the light and give every bead its own play. The stone remains sensitive to hard knocks and sudden changes in temperature.

Material and care

Every bead is a natural product — clarity and inclusions differ from piece to piece. A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough for cleaning. Ultrasonic baths, steam and chemical cleaners are not suitable.
