The stone

.Bamboo coral is a natural material from the skeleton of deep-sea corals. It owes its name to the pale bands that divide the branch like a stem of bamboo. In its raw state it is almost white and is dyed a strong red to orange. It is worked into round beads with a fine grain running lengthwise.

Origin and tradition

Red corals have been part of Mediterranean jewellery since antiquity. In Italy they were worked into necklaces and pendants for centuries, and in folk belief they were companions for newborns and travellers. Bamboo coral continues this visual language without drawing on the now rare precious corals.

What is attributed to it

Bamboo coral is considerably softer than quartz — about 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale. It therefore scratches more easily and does not tolerate acids, not even weak ones such as lemon juice or vinegar. The colour is applied and may fade under heavy wear.

Material and care

Every bead is a natural product — depth of colour and grain differ from piece to piece. Wipe only with a dry, soft cloth. Water, ultrasound and chemical cleaners are not suitable.
