Why the thyroid needs iodine
The thyroid gland needs iodine for hormone production. Iodine deficiency can lead to goiter and hypothyroidism. The body must obtain iodine through food, which many people lack. Germany is also an iodine-deficient area: The drinking water, the soil, and thus also the food crops grown on it are low in iodine.

Iodine-rich diet for hypothyroidism
Iodine-rich foods include primarily sea fish, seafood, and algae. Dairy products and eggs can also contain larger amounts of iodine if the animals have been fed iodine-rich feed. Last but not least, the use of iodized table salt can help prevent iodine deficiency.
Iodine supply is also important during pregnancy
During pregnancy, there is an increased need for iodine because two thyroid glands (the maternal and fetal) require this trace element. A diet rich in iodine-rich foods alone usually cannot meet this need. Therefore, pregnant women should take additional iodine tablets in consultation with their gynecologist.
